(i)Rhino Camp - Ramsai
RRamsai Rhino camp is a govt. resort under forest department
to provide nature lovers a memorable stay. Its located at the boundary of
gorumara forest, adjacent to the village ramsai and a picturesque teat estate.
It has four cottages made in tree house style with all necessary facilities.
There is another resort of forest dept. just in the next village kalipur.
However, we stayed at Ramsai Rhino Camp.
To reach ramsai, you have to go via maynaguri.
From siliguri it should not take more than 2 hrs to drive down to the camp.
There are buses plying regularly between siliguri and maynaguri, and then
maynaguri to ramsai.
To book this forest dept.'s resorts, you have to
go to lataguri counter. Otherwise, you may call in+91 3561 266 340 for booking,
they will guide you.
Now, lets talk about the activities to be done
in the camp. Actually, the only thing to do here, is to feel the nature to the
fullest. Explore the area on your feet. Medhla watch tower is about 1~1.5 Km
away. You can stroll in the jungle trail or take a bullock-cart to medhla...
Most important facility to stay in these camp is the elephant safari, which
other tourists are not allowed to avail. Fooding & lodging, Ride to medhla
watch tower, elephant safari and tribal dance in the evening.... All these
things are included in the package, which is currently Rs. 3900/ per day for
two persons. After reaching medhla watch tower you can just sit and enjoy the
panoramic view of gorumara forest and soak urself into the nature's lap. You
may spot lots of peacocks, bisons and one horn rhino in the grass land and the
planes of murti/jaldhaka river. We had a two days stay, in two days we spotted
11 rhinos and numerous bisons, peacoks, barking deer, wild boars and various
birds. Our mate was 'Amona', a 23 yr old female elephant, in the safari. We had
spotted rhino from about 15feet distance, it was slowly munching on the
grass..... As we approached nearer, he looked up to us for a while to allow us
to take some photographs and then again concentrated on his evening snacks. We
trundled forward into the elephant grass which grows as high as 20'. Later on
we spotted a herd of bisons. From the medhla watchtower, a salt pit is easily
visible, this salt pit is a prime location to spot wild animals. They regularly
visit this place to lick salt. Early Morning and evening times are suitable for
animal sighting in any jungle. Apart from the jungle and watchtower, the
rivers... Murti & jaldhaka and jadavpur...Jalpaiguri - this narrow stretch of land lying between the
Sikkim - Darjeeling Himalayas and Gangetic West Bengal has more than often
evoked a sense of both eerie and romanticism in many a heart since the early
British Rule. Veined by mighty rivers like the Teesta,Torsa, Jaldhaka, Dyna,
Neora, Sankosh etc. this piece of land has been aptly named as the land of
'Tea, Timber & Tourism'. A major stretch of area is bordered in the north
by Bhutan and hence the name - DOOARS/DUARS which mean - Door of Bhutan.
Enclosed by lush tea garden and dense
semi-tropical forest, the journey towards Ramsai is filled with the pictorial
view of changing landscape. The roads leading toward Ramsai take the tourists
through the paddy field towards the land dotted with tall Sal trees midst the
rolling meadow of lavish tea garden. The view of sparkling river stream
meandering through the thick forest enclosing Ramsai is truly a glorious sight
to be adorned after reaching Ramsai. Located at the periphery of Gorumara
National Park sighting of wild animals is a frequent occurrence in Ramsai.
Tourists who want to spend some quality time in the core of jungle can lodge in
the Ramsai Rhino Camp where they can get the true essence of wilderness. There
are many places to visit in and around Ramsai like Medla Watchtower which may
hype the interest of visitor whilst awakening the hidden wilderness explorer
within them. Medla Watchtower offers a panoramic vista of river Jaldhaka
flowing through the verdant forest enclosing Ramsai which looks like glistening
snakes meandering through the plains an awe-inspiring sight which can leave any
bystander mesmerized by the beauty of Dooars. Tourists get a unique experience
of riding on a bullock cart while visiting the Medla watchtower where along
with panoramic vista of verdant forest they might even spot some rhino and wild
elephant. Butterfly Park located close to Ramsai Rhino Camp is another place to
visit while traveling to Ramsai. The ark as the name suggest is the breeding
ground for a vast collection of butterfly species where visitor can see vibrant
colored butterflies flocking around the park. Located 3km from Ramsai is a
scenic picnic spot called Panbari. Panbari is the confluence of 3 major rivers
of Dooars namely Murti, Jaldhaka and Diana. The bank of Panbari has become an
ideal spot for picnicking and the scenic view of the wide expanse of river bed
is truly a sight to be relish upon. Apart for being known for the astounding
destination Dooars is famous for its tea production and visitor can enjoy the
beauty of the enchanting tea gardens of Dooars region while traveling to
Ramsai. Jadavpur Tea Garden located at the vicinity of Ramsai is the ideal
place for the visitor to know more about the magical process behind making the
hand plucked tea leaf. Ramsai is a scenically blessed forest village, the
beauty of which never ceases to amaze the visitors.Spending a night in the serene ambiance at
the core of the jungle while listening to the alluring chirping of crickets and
hooting of exotic night birds can be a moment to be cherished lifetime, and
traveling to Ramsai ensures it all to you. Endowed with the pictorial sight and
tranquil environment, Ramsai of Dooars region has become the place to find
